In English, there are numerous different words for the toilet, including bathroom, restroom, ladies’/mens’ room, john, etc. One popular euphemism for the toilet is the “Loo”. There is no clear evidence for the origin of this word, but one possibility is that it comes from the French “regardez l`eau”, or “watch out for the water”, which is what people would shout when they threw the contents of their chamber pots (medieval toilets) out the window!!!

英語には、実に様々なトイレを意味する言葉がありますね。バスルーム、レストルーム、レイディース/メンズルーム、そしてジョン（アメリカのディズニーワールドのトイレのサインはジョンだそうですよ！）。その中でも婉曲的な言い方の一つが’Loo’。由来は定かでないですが、フランス語の”regardez l`eau”（水に気をつけて！＝尿瓶の中身を窓から通りに捨てる際に叫んでいた言葉）が起源とも言われます。私も海外で仕事中に同僚がLooにいかないと！言った際には、この忙しい最中にLOOとはどこだ？！と突っ込んだ記憶が記憶があります。皆さんも、上手くシーンによって使い分けできるようにしておきましょう。
